Softboard #2
Created for "Whose Waters?" at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, a group show exploring class and privilege in surf culture and running from July 12 to October 20, 2024, Softboard #2 is a foam rubber cast sculpture, which at first glance appears to be a high performance thruster shortboard, but upon closer inspection reveals itself to be a soft, squishy facsimile. The process of making Softboard #2 involved hand shaping and glassing a surfboard utilizing traditional board building methods, creating fiberglass molds of the original shape and fins, and casting the board and fins in soft foam rubber, displayed on a concrete, rebar, and OSB stand, featuring a repurposed cat toy to create subtle movement highlighting the pliable material of the piece. Hand made by Shea Somma.
Purchase price includes installation if located in California. Additional shipping and travel expenses will be determined if located outside California. Sale is contingent on the piece remaining available for future showings.
